This advert I came across on a recent trip made me think about all the creams, perfumes, lipsticks, eyeliners, and countless other ‘beauty’ products marketed at women. Are they really meant ‘just for her’. i.e. ‘just for me’?
Of course not. ‘Just for me’, at this time of year in particular, is first and foremost plenty of E45 for that pesky dry skin. And you don’t see me pouting lustfully when I put it on, just smile at the relief. Everything else, really, is ‘just for him’.
So, can we please stop pretending that the commodification of woman’s every move is for my own benefit? This ‘just for her’ has certainly nothing to do with me.
